Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Grohmann Knives – Pictou, Nova Scotia

Grohmann Knives Limited is a small family business with a big reputation. A commercial buyer from Quebec traveled once a year to a factory in Sudetenland, then a German region of Czechoslovakia, to buy pocket knives. Every year the buyer would urge Grohmann, the production manager at a plant in Mikulasovice, to come to Canada, promising him help to get started. After the war, the political situation grew desperate and in 1949 Rudolph Grohmann accepted the offer.

Within a year, Grohmann and his family arrived in Nova Scotia at the invitation of the provincial government-funded Pictou Cutlery, which closed after three years. Mr. Grohmann, determined to make knives, built a garage workshop & began producing & engraving folding knives designed by himself. After field testing with the help of hunters & trappers across the far north, the D.H. Russell Belt Knife Original #1 was born. Grohmann created three more models, the #2 Trout and Bird, #3 Army, & #4 Survival.  Over the years, Grohmann Knives has added other Canadian outdoor knives complementing the collection.  Six lines of kitchen knives have been included in production over the years, as well as many unique, custom made knives & machine knives.  The top quality knives are produced with as many as 53 steps between starting point & finished product.

After taking the tour and making a few purchases at Grohmann Knives we continued up the coastline and visited a couple of lighthouses on the way.  Here is some of the scenery.

Arisaig Lighthouse - Northumberland Shore
The Arisaig Lighthouse is a replica of the original Arisaig Point Lighthouse, which burned in the early 1930s. Interpretive panels are located on rocks around the Lighthouse which tell the story of the historic fishing community of Arisaig and is located in Antigonish County on the Northumberland Strait.

Cape George Lighthouse
The Cape George Lighthouse is situated in Antigonish County, Nova Scotia at Cape George Point which overlooks the waters of St. George’s Bay. The first lighthouse was built in 1861 and set on top of a wooden house, the first lighthouse was destroyed by fire in 1907. A second lighthouse and keeper’s homestead complete with some farm and a vegetable garden was constructed in 1908. The 1908 lighthouse was rebuilt in 1968 and it is this white, concrete octagonal structure and red octagonal lantern which stands on this site today. This is the third lighthouse built on this site. It stands approximately 360 feet above the bay and both Cape Breton and Prince Edward Island are visible with a clear horizon. This lighthouse is one of the structural features on the Cape George route, also known locally as the "mini Cabot trail".

Tomorrow we move to Louisbourg, Nova Scotia
