Saint John – New Brunswick

Saint John

Saint John is the largest city in New Brunswick, Canada. Located at the mouth of the Saint John River,on the Bay of Fundy.  Saint John Harbour was first entered probably in 1524 by Gomez (A Spaniard) and named Rio De La Buelta. Earlier still Basque, Breton and Norman Fisherman are to believed to have made voyages to the Bay of Fundy in the early 1500s. History records that the French explorers Sieur de Monts and Samuel De Champlain, arrived at the mouth of what is now the St. John River on June 24, 1604, feast day of St. John the Baptist and named the River in the.
Benedict Arnold, the American revolutionary traitor, lived here in 1787 to 1791. During the War of 1812, Martello Tower was built on Lancaster Heights for harbour defense; it is now a national historic site.  A local phenomenon is the "Reversing Falls" at the river's mouth, where strong tidal fluctuations of 30 feet reverse the rivers flow for several miles upstream twice daily( this is truly a site to witness).

Reversing Falls

The phenomenon of the Reversing Falls is caused by the tremendous rise and fall of the tides of the Bay of Fundy, which are the highest in the world. The natural southward-facing opening of the Bay of Fundy receives the on rushing ocean tides directly like a funnel. The tidewater is normal when it enters the bay at its widest point. But the farther up the bay it travels the more it changes. It is, in effect, squeezed by the ever-narrowing sides and the constant shallowing of the bottom forcing the water higher up the shores. The low tide running out of the bay collides with the new, incoming high tide, combining forces to make a higher wave. Here in Saint John, the bay tides rise 28 ½ feet. The water then boils in a series of rapids and whirlpools.

In addition, the park offers jet boat rides

And zip line rides

Saint John City Market

Open year-round, Monday to Saturday, the Saint John City Market offers a unique shopping experience for locals and visitors alike. Nowhere else in Saint John can you experience a traditional "farmers market" while shopping for such a wide selection of goods and services, ranging from dulse to hand-made local crafts, and enjoy a delicious meal from one of the numerous restaurants, featuring local and international foods.

City Bus Tour

Here's a few pictures taken on our bus tour of the city.

Our tour guide and bus driver.  He has done this tour for the caravan for nine years.  One of the best tour guides we have had.

Our last night, our group introduced the caravan to fry bread tacos.
we mixed the dough and everyone rolled their own and gave it to us to fry.  Taco seasoned meat was added and topped with salad.

Our drivers meeting in preparation to move to Moncton, New Brunswick

We move in the morning.
