Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers. The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from the San Juan Mountains.
Our group only rode the train one way. We traveled to Silverton on the bus and rode the train back. This gave us more time for lunch and looking around in Silverton. And yes it was cold and got worse. We had snow and sleet shortly after arriving. Still did not stop us from eating and shopping.
Ready to return to Durango |
Here is the open car we had booked to go back |
Standard dress for the open car |
Above is just some of the miscellaneous shots of the scenery going back to Durango. We were lucky in that the crowd did not fill the train and we were able to move to an inside car. As we got to the lower elevations the snow and sleet diminished and most everyone was in the open car taking pictures.
